Unit 13 is a strategic shooter for the PS Vita, from the makers of SOCOM. It was the first game on the console that I really took a liking to, indeed I was sufficiently enamoured to try and go for that infernal platinum trophy. Late as I was to the PS3 party, I?ve never earned one as yet.
It?s going to be a painful ride.

The game has quite a good selection of trophies to try and achieve, there are tedious story-based ones alongside others that demand a little more dedication and imagination. The game sees you take control of the eponymous squad, six characters in all. Each gains experience and levels individually, and each yields a trophy when they reach their maximum training potential. This in itself was long and irritating enough, but I prevailed.

Unit 13 comprises some 36 missions, some in the run-and-gun style, others demanding a more insidious approach. You?re awarded stars for outstanding performances in each, which allow you to unlock bonus content. These are the High Value Target challenges, levels that provide a far greater challenge than those that came before. Which each target eliminated (after fighting your way through swarms of snipers, rocket guys and those darn shotgunners that delight in appearing an inch in front of you and blowing your face off), you get another trophy. The final of these bonus missions is the major stumbling block, the devious Finish Him!

This is awarded for defeating Scorpion, the last of the High Value Targets. While I?m begrudgingly amused by the Mortal Kombat reference, I?m still deeply frustrated by this. You access this mission with a five star ranking across the board, which is a tall order indeed. (You?ve no idea how lanky this order is.) I didn?t have much trouble with the levels themselves, but the performance necessary to ace them, particularly the final stage, is reasonably hellish. You?re able to obtain the extra missions early via the Near function if a PSN friend who has completed them already ?shares? them, but this isn?t an option.

Gibb matriarch loses third son with Robin's death

LONDON (AP) ? Her sons were blessed with musical gifts that brought riches and fame. On Monday Barbara Gibb was living a parent's ultimate nightmare ? preparing, for the third time, to lay a child to rest.

Her son Robin Gibb ? a Bee Gees founder known for his astonishing vocals and songwriting skills ? died Sunday after a long battle with cancer at the age of 62.

Earlier, she had lost her sons Andy Gibb, a pop idol who died in 1988 at age 30 from a heart ailment, and Maurice Gibb, a member of the Bee Gees and Robin's twin, who died in 2003 of acute intestinal problems.

Several months before his death, Robin Gibb told a British newspaper that he sometimes wondered if the family is paying a "karmic price" for the Bee Gee's mind-blowing success. And friends of Barbara Gibb have been quoted as saying she believes the family may be cursed.

Before illness struck, the Gibb family enjoyed remarkable good fortune. The boys were raised in challenging economic circumstances but were exposed to music at an early age because their father was a bandleader and a drummer and their mother had experience as a singer.

They started singing professionally as teenagers, moving within a few short years to prominence first in Australia, then throughout the world.

But the apparent ease of this meteoric rise was followed by later tragedy.

Both Robin and Maurice ? the twins ? suffered debilitating intestinal problems that led to their premature deaths. Robin suffered from colon cancer and other digestive ailments. He became gaunt even before his cancer diagnosis.

Of the four boys Barbara Gibb raised in England and Australia before they became global stars, only Barry, the eldest, is still alive. She also has a daughter living in Australia who has stayed out of the public eye.

The family's place in pop history is assured, not only because of the Bee Gees' groundbreaking success during the disco era, when they helped define a totally new sound that filled dance halls throughout the world, but also with their success as songwriters and producers.

Their career began in Australia in 1963 and saw them score their first major international hits in 1966 and 1967, when their sound was influenced by the success of the Beatles, who were then topping worldwide charts.

They prospered during the disco era, long after the Beatles had broken up in acrimony, and continued to ride a show business wave for several decades afterward.

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr said Monday that Robin Gibb and the Bee Gees left an enduring musical legacy.

"God bless him and God bless his family," Starr said. "The Bee Gees from our era were quite important, especially the harmonies. I didn't know him that well, I knew Maurice more than the other two, but he had a great voice and they wrote great songs."

The group also wrote many hits for other stars, earning substantial royalties when their songs were performed by the likes of Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick and others.

The British press has reported that Barbara Gibb, a 91-year-old who lives in California, has been in England in recent weeks as Robin's condition worsened when he suffered from pneumonia and drifted into a coma. She has made no public statements, and the family, including his widow Dwina and his children, has asked for privacy while they mourn.

Plans for a funeral or memorial service have not been announced.

Yemen clashes kill 34 militants, soldiers: officials

ADEN, Yemen (Reuters) - At least 22 al Qaeda-linked militants and 12 Yemeni soldiers were killed in clashes and air strikes overnight during a new U.S.-backed offensive against insurgents in the south of the country, officials said on Saturday.

Fighting erupted late on Friday and carried on into Saturday on the outskirts of the southern city of Jaar, held by Islamist militants, who have stepped up their campaign during months of political turmoil.

Government troops, backed by U.S. drone strikes, have been trying to push the insurgents out of strongholds in the south of the country, which lies near oil shipping routes through the Red Sea.

Washington and Yemen's neighbor Saudi Arabia both fear the instability in Yemen could give al Qaeda's regional wing a stronger foothold in the region.

"There is heavy fighting, and the armed elements are doing everything possible to stop the advance of (government) troops," a government official told Reuters, on condition of anonymity.

Government forces were about 1 km (0.6 mile) from Jaar, he added.

Twelve Yemeni soldiers and 17 militants were killed in the fighting and an air strike killed three militants on the outskirts of the city, the official said.

Another air strike destroyed a vehicle used by militants, killing two people inside in the southern province of Bayda, provincial governor Mohammed al-Ameri was quoted as saying on a defense ministry website.

Insurgents have seized swathes of territory in the south of the impoverished Arab country since mass protests erupted last year against then-President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Washington has stepped up drone attacks in Yemen since President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took office in February. The Pentagon said earlier this month it had resumed sending military trainers to the Arab state.

On Friday, an army official and residents said troops backed by local tribesmen had killed 10 suspected Islamist militants outside Jaar.

Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda retreated on Thursday from the town of Lawder, about 80km north of Jaar, as warplanes attacked and ground troops advanced on insurgent-held towns.

Lucky sky-watchers in the western U.S. are in for a treat Sunday: an annular eclipse.

That?s when the Earth and moon's relative orbital positions leave the moon too small to completely cover the sun, from our point of view. The result is a black disk encircled by a brilliant ring of fire. It?s the first time since 1994 that an annular eclipse will hit the mainland U.S.

Up to 94 percent of the sun will be blocked out?but you?ll still need a pinhole viewer or solar filter to view it safely. Weather permiting, the eclipse will be visible in several western U.S. states on the evening of May 20th. The eclipse path crosses Medford, Oregon; Chico, California; Reno, Nevada; much of the Grand Canyon; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. It will also cross Tokyo on the morning of May 21st, Japanese time. A partial eclipse can be seen from many more locations. For a map of where the eclipse will be visible, and when, go to bit.ly/solarpath.

If can?t see this eclipse, perhaps you?ll have better luck in 2017. That?s when a total eclipse of the sun will sweep across the U.S., giving you a chance to stand in the shadow of the moon.
