Asmussen says euro zone in better shape than 12 months ago

BERLIN (Reuters) - European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said on Sunday the euro zone is in better shape than a year ago thanks to positive budget consolidation efforts in individual countries, the European Union's fiscal pact and ECB actions.

Speaking on German network ARD, Asmussen said the euro zone was in better shape now than a year ago despite the weak growth in the fourth quarter of 2012. He cited in particular Italy prime minister Mario Monti's budget consolidation efforts.

"We're in better shape now than 12 months ago due to several factors," he said. "There was positive steps taken by individual member states, such as the budget consolidation by the Monti government.

"There was also the fiscal pact agreed at the European Union level," he added, referring to the European budget discipline treaty. "And there was also the actions of the ECB that were within our mandate. So we're in better shape even though growth in the fourth quarter was weak."

Skype rolls out video-messaging beta for non-Microsoft platforms

Microsoft's Skype division has rolled out a beta of its new video-messaging capability for Skype on February 15. It works on iOS, Mac and Android versions of Skype.

What about Windows, Windows 8 and Windows Phone? Video-messaging support has not been added on these platforms, and Skype officials are not providing a date as to when it will be, though it supposedly is (at least on Windows and Windows 8, based on what Skype told The Verge).

Yes, Microsoft did buy Skype two years ago. But Skype seems to be continuing to add new features and fixes to any/all of its platforms, regardless of which vendor makes them.

Video Messages, which can be used for online and offline messaging, lets Skype users send up to three minutes of video to each other. According to The Verge, those using Skype for Windows or Windows Phone will receive a link to allow them to view video messages online.

The fact Skype was working on Video Messages has been known since last year. Premium subscribers are expected to be allowed to send an unlimited number of Video Messages, while those using free versions of Skype will be limited in how many video messages they can send and how long they will be retained, according to a leak from last year.

The new feature seems to be working for Skype users in the U.S. and U.K. I've asked Microsoft's Skype division for more details, including more on why there's no Windows support at present. No word back so far.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson said Windows users will get the "send" Video Messages feature in late April. No word on when WP users will get this or why the feature is running behind on Windows. (I asked again.)

Microsoft rolled out updated versions of Skype for Windows and Mac this week.?

Rihanna, Issa light up London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week moved into high international gear Saturday with a debut collection from Barbadian pop diva Rihanna, a Native American-inspired show by Brazilian-born Issa and a host of other eclectic offerings.

No one went to Rihanna's Saturday night debut as a fashion designer expecting demure dresses set off with tasteful pearls.

So no one was surprised by the double-volume hip-hop music, smoke machines and champagne that greeted guests at the unveiling of her Rihanna for River Island collection.

And few were taken aback by the bad girl, rock chick styling of some of her clothes, with tight-fitting jersey outfits and dresses cut to show more than a bit of leg.

It was a fun, flattering collection aimed at young women, containing nothing shocking or outrageous from a singer who has been known to bring those elements to her live performances.

She provided some pop star glamour to an already glittering London Fashion Week, which will soon showcase the work of Vivienne Westwood, Burberry's Christopher Bailey, and Tom Ford.

Rihanna followed Brazilian-born Daniela Issa Helayel (better known as Issa), John Rocha, Julien Macdonald and others to center stage on the second day of fashion week.

Much of the buzz Saturday was about Rihanna's first-even fashion collection. Many of her outfits had a simple, monochrome look - in off-reds, yellow, navy, black and other colors - and they were cut to look good on those blessed with a fit physique.

Some were satin, some jersey, and some of the short skirts were made with denim and matched with crop tops or T-shirts.

Rihanna also tried her hand at a few elegant, semi-sheer dresses that were predominantly black with white floral patterns.

The singer appeared unusually shy but happy in her brief appearance on the catwalk to take in the audience's applause. She wore a short black dress as she waved to her fans.

If Rihanna brought a touch of show biz royalty to the catwalk, Issa brought her gold-plated royal connections. She is one of the favorite designers of the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton, who helped bring Issa to the world's attention before her marriage to Prince William.

Issa toned down her usual tropical exuberance to pay homage to the designs associated with Native Americans, particularly the Navajo, in a more muted but elegant presentation.

"It's quite different for us," Issa said. "I was very inspired by American Indians, the Navajos, the feathers. The woman goes to Morocco, she's nomadic, she's far cooler than before."

The shapes and cut were dramatic, and knitwear tops that turned into cowl necks and balaclava-style headgear brought warmth and wit to the show. So did the hats, some trailed by feathers that were three feet long.

Of course, she threw in a few sparkly evening dresses, with a plunging neckline or a backless look, to help make cocktail hour sizzle.

Despite leaving behind the fine weather and natural allure of Brazil, Issa said she finds joy in London, even if the weather is often drab.

"Even when it's misty and fog, it's beautiful," she said. "The shades of gray are fantastic. And it's not misty and foggy all the time."

And she gets a kick out of being part of an A-list fashion crowd, enjoying a reception Friday night at 10 Downing Street with designer Victoria Beckham, American Vogue editor Anna Wintour and other top figures.

Issa denies designing any maternity clothes for the Duchess of Cambridge, who is expecting a baby in July. But she said many of her stretchy dresses are popular with mothers-to-be.

The five-day spectacle continues Sunday with shows by Vivienne Westwood, Temperley London, L'Wren Scott and others.

A player in debt issue? Harlem Shake

If you were waiting for the political world to glom onto the ?Harlem Shake? online dancing phenomenon, your wait is over.

Alice Rivlin, the former director of the Congressional Budget Office, and David Walker, the former Comptroller General of the United States, are getting their shake on in a new video for The Can Kicks Back campaign.

The video begins innocently enough, with Rivlin and Walker telling a conference room full of twenty somethings that ?it?s time to shake things up? and ?there?s no dancing around the fact that more needs to be done? (get it?).

?The Congressional Budget Office?s new report shows that our national debt will hit 77 percent of the gross domestic product by 2023,? says Rivlin. ?We can?t grow our economy and have a prosperous America with debt growing that fast.?

?And you know that will impact young people the most,? Walker says.

Then things get crazy.

True to ?Harlem Shakes? form, the conference room ? including Rivlin and Walker ? bust into body-wriggling dancing.

The Internet meme, which has exploded online this month, begins with one person dancing with those around him or her seemingly unaware. Later, the entire room erupts into dance.

The Can Kicks Back campaign was launched late last year and is a ?millennial-driven campaign to fix the national debt and reclaim our American Dream,? according to its website.

This isn?t the group?s first foray into viral videos ? this was the group that brought us former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson dancing ?Gangham style?.

FireCore releases updated Apple TV jailbreak tool and aTV Flash (black) software

FireCore releases updated Apple TV jailbreak tool and aTV Flash (black) softwareFireCore has announced that it has now updated its Seas0nPass jailbreak tool and its aTV Flash Apple TV software which now supports the latest version of iOS for the Apple TV. Apple rolled out iOS 5.2 which is actually iOS 6.1 for the Apple TV last month and if you were jailbroken prior to this, you hadn?t been able to upgrade. Thankfully you can now and if you do, you can gain additional features from Apple like Bluetooth keyboard support and better iCloud integration as well as the new features from aTV Flash (black) if you jailbreak again.

The wait is over, and today we?re happy to release updated versions of aTV Flash (black) and Seas0nPass that support the recently released 5.2 (iOS 6.1) Apple TV software. Big thanks goes to the evad3rs for making much of this possible. Hooray for Bluetooth!

To the delight of many loyal users, Apple officially added support for Bluetooth keyboards in Apple TV 5.2, and we?ve been working non-stop to provide a seamless experience in aTV Flash (black) 2.2. Now features such as web browsing, media playback, library browsing and more can all be controlled using a wireless keyboard. Don?t worry, the normal remote will still work as well.

The aTV Flash software version 2.2 can only be installed on a jailbroken second generation Apple TV (2010, 720p version) as there is still no jailbreak available for the latest third generation Apple TV (2012, 1080p version). If you want to give it a try, version 2.2 is available now from the Firecore website. If you're already running a version of aTV Flash (black) the new 2.2 version can be installed through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

You must be running Apple TV version 4.4 at a minimum. Of course if you want the Bluetooth keyboard features you will need to install Apple?s latest software update then jailbreak again with the new version of Seas0nPass.

Need help jailbreaking your Apple TV 2? If so, be sure to check out our full how-to guide.

A little molecule's remarkable feat: Prolonging life

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Nitric oxide, the versatile gas that helps increase blood flow, transmit nerve signals, and regulate immune function, appears to perform one more biological feat -- prolonging the life of an organism and fortifying it against environmental stress, according to a new study.

The study reveals that a roundworm called Caenorhabditis elegans, an animal widely used in laboratory studies of aging, lives significantly longer when fed bacteria capable of manufacturing nitric oxide. The tantalizing observation points to one of the mechanisms by which the microbiome, the trillions of microbial cells inhabiting our bodies, may play a vital role in our health.

Our own nitric oxide levels decrease as we get older, a decline that may contribute to normal aging, says Evgeny Nudler, PhD, the Julie Wilson Anderson Professor of Biochemistry at NYU Langone Medical Center, who led the new study. Supplemental bacteria, he speculates, might provide a healthy boost by supplying humans with some of the missing compound.

"In worms, we now know that bacteria can use nitric oxide not only to their own advantage but also to provide their host with a beneficial response, and the same thing could be true in a human gut," says Dr. Nudler. "It may well be the case that our commensal bacteria control some of our genes, at least in the gut, to protect those cells against stress and age-related decline." Commensal bacteria provide a benefit to the organisms they colonize.

Although humans and many other organisms have the enzyme needed to produce nitric oxide, C. elegans does not. Instead, Dr. Nudler and his team report in the February 14th online issue of Cell that the worm can "hijack" the compound from the soil-dwelling Bacillus subtilis bacterium that is not only a favored food but also a common colonist within its gut. This resourcefulness, Dr. Nudler says, partially explains why worms fed B. subtilis live roughly 50 percent longer than counterparts fed Escherichia coli, which does not produce the compound.

In the new study, the average C. elegans lifespan increased by nearly 15 percent, to about two weeks, when researchers fed the worms nitric oxide-producing B. subtilis bacteria, compared to worms fed mutant B. subtilis with a deleted nitric oxide production gene. The research group also used fluorescent sensors to show that C. elegans does not make its own nitric oxide gas. When the worms were fed normal B. subtilis bacteria, however, the fluorescent signal appeared in their guts.

Fluorescent labeling and other tests also demonstrated that B. subtilis-derived nitric oxide penetrated the worms' tissues, where it activated a set of 65 genes. Some had been previously implicated in stress resistance, immune response, and increased lifespan, though others have unknown functions. Importantly, the researchers showed that two well-known regulatory proteins were essential for activating all of the genes.

"What we found is that nitric oxide gas produced in bacteria inside the worms diffuses into the worm tissue and activates a very specific set of genes acting through two master regulators, hsf-1 and daf-16, resulting in a high resistance to stress and a longer life," Dr. Nudler says. "It's striking that a small molecule produced by one organism can dramatically affect the physiology and even lifespan of another organism through direct cell signaling."

As part of nitric oxide's expansive repertoire, Dr. Nudler's lab previously showed how dangerous pathogens can exploit the molecule to fight off antibiotics. Despite its versatility, the new research suggests that nitric oxide is only one of multiple beneficial molecules produced by B. subtilis, Dr. Nudler says. His lab plans to look more closely at other potential mechanisms by which commensal bacteria can promote health and longevity, using the powerful and easily manipulated C. elegans system as a model.

The study co-authors include Ivan Gusarov, Laurent Gautier, Olga Smolentseva, and Ilya Shamovsky from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at NYU Langone Medical Center; and Svetlana Eremina and Alexander Mironov from the State Research Institute of Genetics and Selection of Industrial Microorganisms in Moscow, Russia.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Biogerontology Research Foundation, and the Dynasty Foundation.
