Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf Was a Soldier's General

Yahoo News asked veterans for their thoughts and appreciations of Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, who died Thursday at 78.

COMMENTARY | It was truly sad to see the announcement of the passing of Norman Schwarzkopf. As a military retiree and a Vietnam veteran, I believe I could understand, empathize and cheer on the general when he lead the forces that liberated Kuwait from the savage Iraqi occupation in 1990.

The contrast between the military campaigns in the Vietnam and Iraq wars is striking, as the former put severe constraints on the military commanders and was orchestrated by Robert McNamara and his so-called civilian "Whiz Kids" back in the comfortable offices in Washington, D.C., while the latter gave Schwarzkopf a great deal of latitude for his planning and execution of his strategy. And history has written it was a brilliant, successful one at that.

Having been in the Air Force for 35 years, I've had a front-row seat to various styles of military leadership, with my insight being honed as time went on and I rose through the ranks. To quote a former commander of mine, "I know what good looks like." General Schwarzkopf was not only good, he was great.

One thing I do know is that the general wasn't a "perfumed prince." He didn't rise rapidly through the officer ranks by being a "yes" man, by keeping his thoughts to himself for fear of offending a superior and certainly not by subscribing to the ever-increasing political correctness in the military.

Yes, he was prone to thunderous outbursts at times, and even had his moments of emotional crisis during his calls with Gen. Colin Powell from his bunker. But that's what made him a military diamond in the rough. While other generals were polished, people discovered more facets of Schwarzkopf: his superb leadership with the troops and officers and his unflagging patriotism while in uniform and later in retirement.

RIP, Sir...

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

LOL - If you are me, then who am I?

Salutations to RolePlayGateway and to all of its members and staff, both newbs and oldies alike. Forgive my slowness but you see I'm a very old veteran who hasn't touched a keyboard in a very long time. Allow me to introduce myself... Wesley, the Undying if you will, to distinguish me from others bearing my name.

It's funny what ye might find whilst browsing the internet. You see I am Wesley, the one whom ye have mentioned... T'was I who fought along-side the Mavericks at the fabled Castle Of Dragons, and who battled along-side the Z Senshi Elite of Comicity, and who dueled against the Yakuza of Multicity... But I'm afraid my history, glory and fame stops there.

I stopped being a part of the RPG circle in 2002, which means today is my first time ever to RolePlayGateway and everything you've ever been told about me is a falsehood. I've never gone by the name Dionysus and I have no idea who that is apart from someone who single-handedly destroyed my good name and reputation. I've never gone by the name of Goutetsu, Dexter or Nonpariel... I've never even been to Nonpariel's site, and my visit to Metawerx was very brief, ending with but one acquaintance.

You must be wondering why I'm here. I'm here to apologise for any wrong-doing, ill feelings, harm, envy or hatred caused either by myself... or by others bearing my name.. I do not ask for any kindness, forgiveness, understanding or respect. I ask only that you forgive each other and learn to accept as I have, by setting a good example.

You may think you already know me, but you don't... There is more to writing than just telling a story, and although it's true I do have a place in the martial arts, I would never disrespect another martial artist, especially someone over the computer who I've never even met. There is more to life than money and fighting, and that is why I've come to set the record straight... Even if you want to put the blame on me... I am worthy. I am stronger than the darkness and my spirit is undying.

MERRY XMAS & HAPPY NEWYEAR

(AP) ? The Sandy Hook section of Newtown was a gathering place this weekend for hundreds of people drawn to the scene of the recent massacre to share in the community's mourning and come to terms with the shocking school tragedy.

The village's downtown was clogged with traffic Sunday, with license plates from all across New England and beyond.

Residents across Newtown, meanwhile, were seeking to move forward through faith, community and a determination to seize their future. Many have taken advantage of counseling services.

Both groups are trying in their own way to cope with the puzzling Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took the lives of 20 children and six adults. Police say the gunman killed his mother before heading to the school and committed suicide afterward.

People with bouquets of flowers, teddy bears and cameras walked along the closed road to the makeshift memorial near the school. Mark Burkhart brought his wife and daughter from Wingdale, N.Y., to pay their respects.

"We felt we had to come here to grieve a little bit," he said. "You find yourself not sure what to do or what to say, so this kind of helps."

Connor Collier, 21, of Newtown, said visitors earlier in the week were mostly with the media. But that changed during the weekend to "just regular people" from as far away as Washington State and Florida.

"Frankly, I like this a lot better. Everybody wants to help," said Collier, who has spent the past week near the village Christmas tree selling green and white bracelets that read, "Angels of Sandy Hook." He said he has raised $40,000 for a fund established for the victims.

A man dressed as Santa greeted visitors Sunday while a group of saxophone players from Newtown High School serenaded the crowd with Christmas carols.

Anne Spillane, 51, of Sandy Hook, drove some of the band members, including her daughter. She said the brother of one band member was killed in the shooting. He was one of several victims the Sillane family knew.

She said she and others in town have been buoyed by the outpouring of support.

A family that lives about three hours away in New Bedford, Mass., came Saturday with a life-sized Santa Claus that held a scroll with the names of all the victims engraved on it, Sillane said.

And a police officer from New Britain gave her a box of homemade Christmas ornaments with the names of each victim on them, Sillane said.

"I gave those to our monsignor, and he's going to give them to the families," she said. "People are just so good. We understand. They just want to do something."

At religious services in Newtown on Sunday, parishioners recognized their church leaders for helping them to cope with the shooting deaths.

After the Sunday service at Newtown's Trinity Episcopal Church, the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd received hugs and kisses from a long line of parishioners. She choked up as she read the names of the victims and offered a prayer for all of them, including gunman Adam Lanza and his slain mother, Nancy.

Monsignor Robert Weiss of the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church thanked the community for giving him strength to get through a week filled with funerals. St. Rose of Lima lost eight children and two adults in the massacre.

"This has been the worst week of my life," Weiss said.

Deacon Rick Scinto of St. Rose of Lima said church officials will be teamed with professional counselors and therapists to provide assistance.

"I don't see us taking a lead role, but I certainly see us taking a cooperative role in any kind of counseling that they need. We have our niche. We're religious and we can talk about God and how the Lord figures in this whole mess," Scinto said.

To deal with the short-term trauma, the state sent dozens of mental health professionals to Newtown. Sessions were available every day, at a half-dozen locations. Relief also has been provided by therapy and service dogs, massage therapists, acupuncturists and art therapists, from around Connecticut and the nation.

Dennis Stratford, who works for the school district, happened to be making a delivery to Sandy Hook Elementary when the gunman attacked. He saw dead children. He saw the remains of dead children on those who survived. He waited agonizing minutes for his own child to emerge unharmed from the school. Two of his neighbors' children did not.

"I go home and cry every night, and I cry every morning," Stratford said.

He went to one counseling session, but the horrific images remain. What helps more is work: sorting through the warehouses full of gifts, delivering them where they need to go or doing whatever else needs to be done for his town.

"There were nine minutes of evil, and an infinity of goodness after that," Stratford said, sitting on a forklift loaded with gifts. "This is therapy for me."

Sandy Hook Shooting: Let's Dump the Psychological Doubletalk ...

By: Rev. Bresciani

Out of respect for the little souls who were brutally murdered and their families this piece will make no mention of any of them or their families. Suffice it to say that they have suffered enough. These children and those who tried to protect them, some at the cost of their own lives, have done nothing wrong, but we, as a society have plenty to answer for.

Now, a new kind of suffering is being laid upon them, as media crews from all over the nation and the world will be prying into their lives and forcing them to re-live scenes of horror, sights and sounds, all to extract every gory detail for their exclusives, stories and news items. The competition to tell, that comes from hell, has begun.

It is impossible not to be somewhere between incensed and irate after hearing the rap between Fox?s O?Reilly and some of the so called psychology experts on the night the shooting took place. O?Reilly was entangled with one expert on the semantic difference between a psychopath and a sociopath. Interspersed throughout the dialogue was an exasperated, throw in the towel declaration, voiced repeatedly by O?Reilly who said ?It?s just pure evil, and I guess you just can?t stop it.?

The next day another ?expert? forcefully emphasized that we should not tell those children or any other children that it was evil that caused the killings. He advised that mental illness alone should be used as an explanation.

It is here that we see the so called ?experts? as not only part of the problem, but as a gaggle of buffoons, who should by any means, be ushered off the news set, and told to go home.

The repeated warnings I have made in the last few years along with many others have fallen on deaf ears, but the power of reciprocation is barreling ahead at the speed of judgment. Following a passage that details the sinfulness of the homosexual lifestyle, the Apostle Paul warned that in the last days men would cast off the knowledge of God and they will become increasingly reprobate.

Reprobation is not just what leads to judgment; it is the judgment, anything beyond it, is called destruction.

It is a progressive state of decadence that starts with the inability to discern between right and wrong. When it reaches that level where good and evil are not recognizable, it is in the advanced and most dangerous stage. In its most advanced stages, destruction is all that remains.

Atheists, secularists, educators and the well-educated may think they have everything well under control, but life in America is quickly dispelling that absurdity.

The modernist may think that Christ, his apostles, and todays preachers and messengers are pedaling an old, long since outdated, philosophy of religion that was borne in ignorance, and practiced today only because of their tolerance and something called the First Amendment.

In his time of popularity, in the cities and towns surrounding Jerusalem, Christ healed every kind of malady and disease. He knew full well that some were diseases and others were obviously demonic or satanic intrusions.

?And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.? (Mt 4: 23, 24)

The difference between those who had ?devils? and those who were ?lunatic? was well known to Christ and to those who follow him today, the difference is still very visible. What does this mean? Put simply it means that what happened in Sandy Hook School in Connecticut this past week was pure evil done by a young man who had submitted to it over a long period of time or perhaps all at once in a final demonically inspired act or pure terror.

Like so many bewildered dumbbells? we send out the perennial question of ?why? across the media. What we are asking is why an individual suspended every semblance of decency, right and wrong and ordinary sanity.

We always refuse to accept that, we are collectively the cause of the problem. It is what we have introduced, exposed, built upon and allowed in our society that has spawned a generation of reckless, mindless and evil children who wouldn?t know a moral guide post if they ran into it with a truck.

We have successfully kept God out of the public, the schools and the hearts and minds of our young. We have demanded grades and high levels of competitive behavior with no moral undergirding. More than a generation later we are reaping what we have sown. God forbid that we should collectively own up to spiritually dumbing down our own kids.

God forbid that Hollywood, TV, game producers, the internet or lazy parents would admit that after pumping ever more vivid and graphic violence into our children the great horror movie is now showing in our homes and neighborhoods rather than just being confined to the screen.

Hollywood, TV, game creators and media pimp the satanically inspired message of violence and we reward them with the notoriety and privilege of celebrity, Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globe awards. Collective hypocrisy is created by a society that then hires psychology?s brightest and best to explain away the disasters that ensue all too frequently when the weakest of minds carry out, imitate or re-stage the acts of violence they are bombarded with from day to day.

We love to teach our children to eat right and be healthy. We are what we eat, and we need to grow up strong, these are the mantras of the day. What hypocrisy. Could it be that what we allow, or rather, endlessly pump into the heads and hearts of the same children might make spiritual dwarfs out of them, starving for guidance, for knowledge of what is right and decent.

We make it socially un-acceptable to spank a child, but hand out condoms and contraceptives to the same children. They always get bitten by the same diseases, disappointments and disillusionments, but when it comes time for them to find a different way they are lost. They have not seen it, heard it, or seen it lived. They breakout, act out, and take themselves out for good, but often not without taking others with them.

What follows are the arguments from the experts about who is a sociopath versus who is a psychopath. What ever happened to sin, evil and just lousy behavior? Don?t worry, even smothered under a false heap of politically correct gobbledygook and psychological tripe ? it is doing quite well and thriving in America. Don?t take my word for it; just ask the families and friends of the 16,000 people who were murdered in this nation last year alone. Not to exclude the people who successfully commit suicide in the U.S. at the rate of one every 13 minutes.

We will not accept the truth that according to our own words, the equation we have created works diametrically against us. Any society that promotes gratuitous violence and disregard for life to its own offspring has become a total society of sociopaths. The few who act out the behaviors we have fed to them are the psychopaths. It is an equation and a product of our own making. It is ?reap and sow? in action under modernity?s own terms.

We don?t doubt that if we allow dirt in the gas tank the car will eventually stop or be gradually made useless. We don?t dump toxic waste in our gardens and expect a crop of tulips. But with our children, we allow them to be filled with extreme violence in horror shows, CSI type shows, sudden death electronic games, movies, literature and everyday bullying in most of today?s public schools. When one of them acts out violently against others we call in the experts, ask why, and the cycle starts all over again.

Next, along comes the armies of liberals, dilettante democrats and one world of peace and harmony advocates with their heads in the clouds who decry guns; any kind of guns owned by any kind of people.

It never occurs to them that entire generations of Americans grew up with guns around the house and no one brought them to school to create a massacre. Instead of making guns illegal they might want to make not having trigger locks, impenetrable gun cabinets and other safeguards in place illegal for those with children at home.

While we are locking up our guns we might want to lock up the Hollywood quacks that show our children mass slaughter with guns and glorify and glamorize it from one movie to the next in a continual stream of violent full color, action filled gratuitous gunplay. What problem can?t be solved with a simple pull of the trigger?

Society, a Godless society, has become far more dangerous than the guns they own.

As stated, I will not use the deaths of the innocents in Connecticut to make my case because they are symptomatic of a greater problem. The horror, the deep grief, the heartache and loss the parents in Connecticut are feeling is almost impossible to imagine, and for them, it is equally impossible to bear.

Whether you believe in God or not makes no difference at this juncture. But if you have any inkling that he exists or if you have ever doubted that the creator sees all that we say and do. If you have ever heard, or read, that Jesus Christ has said that God the Father knows the number of the hairs on your head; (Mt 10: 30) then consider this ? God goes through the equivalent of the Connecticut shooting 200 times over, every single day as 4,000 unborn human beings are destroyed and dumped in waste boxes each day in these United States.

The one who created the hearts of men ? that physiological, mental and spiritual center of each and every human being, also has a heart. His heart is breaking at the loss of every single unwanted and brutally discarded human being we waste in the name of personal selfishness, Roe v. Wade or any other flimsy construct we devise to hide behind.

The frosting on this cake is watching a President who sanctions the death of 4,000 unborn babies every day, shedding a tear for twenty precious innocents in Sandy Hook. This sort of hypocrisy is insulting to their memory and the wasted potential of their lives. Every tiny human being deserves our love and protection, regardless of just how ?tiny? they may be.

Be it Sandy Hook or Roe v. Wade ? is deciding that some human beings will not be allowed to take their first breath ? any less horrid than deciding which ones should take their last?
Dare we admit that from our President to the millions of pro-abortion advocates in America, we have created 65 million Sandy Hook massacres all in the name of someone else having a better life? By simply inverting the meaning of ?Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends,? (Jn 15: 13) the rendering would be ?Lesser love hath no man than this, that he give up the life of another for himself??

Is the 40 years of unbridled abortion actually somehow cosmically or universally linked to the Sandy Hook massacre? Don?t dare to think they are not.

We are screaming out our disregard for human life, but refuse to admit that our children are listening to the sound of our behaviors. Their penchant for death and disregard for life has grown exponentially during the last two decades and we call upon the ?experts? to explain it all away. Their politically correct admonishments become the harking of fools, clouds with no rain and certainly, they are no balm in Gilead. (Jer 8: 22)

We never admit that Godlessness is failure; our criterion for success, is itself ? a sad failure. Our ?winners? are racing headlong to a generational dead end that can only be averted by a sudden full stop and a return to the God of our founders, fathers and faithful messengers of the gospel. Yes, the ?religious? word that describes this action is still called ? repentance.

The call has gone out in a hundred ways across our nation and the globe. The next move is ours to make. God has fairly warned that his chosen voices will one day have to make the call. We will all be called upon to show our hand and give up the goods. You will either be on one side or the other, whether you choose to be or not.

The reprobation that surges across the globe in the last days does not keep those who cannot recognize evil, from being its victims. The Apostle John in the last book and the last chapter of the Bible describes the last day?s people of our world. It is a take it or leave it message, and is perhaps the saddest proclamation in the entirety of scripture, to wit:

?He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.? (Rev 22: 11)

We assign the God of creation to the realm of mythology and in the process dismiss the god of this world, Satan or the, arch deceiver, as part of the myth. What a victory for evil. We promote the violence, greed, disregard for life and every form of perversion and then we engage psychological terms to explain away the ever encroaching product of that evil. The grandest deception of all has been laid on this generation. The evil we cannot, or will not identify ? has become our cruel, heartless and un-loving master.

Jesus spoke a parable (Mt 13: 24f) of a wheat farmer who planted in his field, when he slept an enemy came and planted tares (worthless weeds) in his field. He wanted to rip out the tares, but was told to leave them, lest he destroy his wheat in the process. We are a nation of wheat farmers who arise to see the weeds, but show no concern except to offer a debate on whether the enemy that sewed the tares was evil or mentally impaired a sociopath or a psychopath.

Those of us, who have extensively studied the prophetic teachings of scripture, are fully convinced that Solomon, the wisest of men, was referring to this generation when he said:

?There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.? (Prov 30: 12)

Why Instagram Will Never Be the Same

Even though Instagram has both apologized and now?walked back its terms of service ? CEO Kevin Systrom announced?last night that his company would revert to almost the exact?language?as before this week's?mutiny ? the photo-sharing app has given its once universally loyal users an idea of what to expect (at some point) from a tech universe very much prioritizing money over user experience.?Before Monday afternoon, when Instagram unveiled a new privacy policy that suggested its users' photos could be used as a kind of advertising, the app had?a cultish following ? a "community," and the same one that made Facebook offer $1 billion for it in April. By the time its users woke up Friday morning, if a couple feeds and some influential tech types are to be believed, Instagrammers were still deeply frustrated that monetization was being put ahead of, you know, some nice filtered photos and their friends.

RELATED: Instagram Was Mark Zuckerberg's Last Hurrah as Facebook's Hacker King

Even Thursday night's move to revert to the kind of new-old terms of service still shows that Instagram may be open to more advertising ideas its users won't like ? as long as it tells them first. From Systrom's blog post:?

Going forward, rather than obtain permission from you to introduce possible advertising products we have not yet developed, we are going to take the time to complete our plans, and then come back to our users and explain how we would like for our advertising business to work.

Translation,?according to AllThingsD's Peter Kafka: Instagram wants you to feel better, but if you don't want ads, don't look here. Just because they're?trying?not to upset you doesn't mean Instagram won't ? and it's time for the service to make money; Facebook says so.

But of course users aren't going to like what Instagram "comes back" with ? the current setup couldn't be any better. And in a way it's difficult?not to blame ourselves for getting into this situation. How, ask?The Atlantic's Derek Thompson?and several others the morning after,?can we expect to use highly popular and highly functional web- and mobile-based services... without paying for them at some point? Perhaps?this morning's XKCD comic?(above) make this point the most clearly: in outrage, there is often futility.

Plenty of power users have stuck to their principles and?abandoned Instagram altogether. Other similar apps have seen their memberships increasing already, as?Bits Blogs Jenna Wortham and Nicole Perlroth note. (And Flickr might just be worth it.) But we suspect that Instagram will continue to grow and most of the now forever-frustrated users won't leave over this week's dust-up. Even if other photo-sharing apps have seen a surge in downloads, it doesn't mean everyone's going to use them after playing around over a couple of eggnogs next week. And you can have more than one photo app per cellphone, after all. And for now, at least, Instagram has all the right kinds of users and is still giving them what they want ? for free. That the relationship will change when it adds advertising or a premium charge means that the tipping point is to come, that Facebook just needs to say when. Then again, nobody's really left Facebook yet, have they?

South African Rand Firms On Ramaphosa's Election As ANC's Deputy President

VENTURES AFRICA ? The rand firmed against a basket of currencies on Tuesday to a more than two-month high after it was announced that Jacob Zuma had been re-elected president of the ruling party ANC.

Analysts said the rand?s performance was not particularly on the back of Zuma?s re-election but on the election of businessman Cyril Ramaphosa as deputy president of the ruling party.

Investors and markets reckon Ramaphosa?s election is good in that it will be building shattered relations between labour, business and government.

?As much as he has a remarkable business insight, he also understands labour issues a lot,? one Johannesburg-based analyst told Ventures Online, adding he has made many investors happy.

Once a leading trade unionist, Ramaphosa became the symbol of black capitalism in South Africa after the ANC came to power at the end of white minority rule in 1994.

But business was never his passion. His first love was politics and he harboured ambitions to become the deputy of Nelson Mandela, South Africa?s first black president.

When Mandela overlooked him, he was said to have been so upset that he refused to attend Mandela?s inauguration as president. He also declined to take a post in government.

Instead, Ramaphosa ? a qualified lawyer ? became an MP and chairman of the constitutional assembly, playing the lead role in drafting South Africa?s post-apartheid constitution, one of the most liberal in the world.

On Tuesday, the rand firmed to 8.5226 after the announcement. By 1557 GMT it hit a session best of 8.5125 as local equities closed at a new record high. Hopes for a resolution to the U.S. fiscal cliff crisis also boosted markets.

Analysts added the choice of millionaire businessman and former mining union leader Ramaphosa as deputy president would make the ANC more business friendly. It was unlikely, however, that there would be changes made to South Africa?s rigid labour laws.

Canadian fighter Wolfgang Janssen doesn't have a nickname. Perhaps he doesn't have because his name is Wolfgang Janssen, and a nickname is not necessary. Perhaps it's because he can do stuff like this, and now will be known as the guy who won by a flying reverse triangle.

Janssen is an undefeated featherweight with all three wins by submission.

19 indicted for drug trafficking in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.?Nineteen members of a drug trafficking organization allegedly operating in central and northern New Mexico have been indicted.

The 60-count indictment was unsealed Monday following the arrests of 13 of the defendants. They all made their initial appearances in federal court in Albuquerque.

Authorities say the drug trafficking organization allegedly was headed by 33-year-old Christopher Roybal of Albuquerque.

According to the indictment, Roybal and others allegedly conspired to distribute quantities of marijuana and cocaine in New Mexico over the last 16 months.

Undercover officers purchased 3 1/2 kilograms of cocaine and about 18 pounds of high-grade marijuana that led to the arrests.

The indictment seeks forfeiture of numerous bank accounts as well as a money judgment of at least $4.1 million.

Militants battle Pakistani police after attacking airport

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Militants holed up in a half-built house in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar battled security forces on Sunday after taking part in an attack on a nearby airport the previous night, officials said.

All five of the militants who were holed up in two buildings under construction were killed by the afternoon, a provincial government and army official said.

The shoot-out erupted hours after an attack on Peshawar airport. The military declared the airport secure after killing five attackers who rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the outer wall of the airfield and battled guards after dark on Saturday.

The raid on the airport was the biggest assault on a high-profile military facility in Pakistan since gunmen stormed an air base in the province of Punjab in August, and underscored the resilience and reach of Pakistan's Taliban insurgents.

The Pakistani Taliban, who have been fighting for more than five years to overthrow the state, said they had sent 10 men to attack the airport.

"Five militants were hiding in an under-construction house near Peshawar airport," said Mian Iftikhar Hussain, a spokesman for the provincial government, on Sunday.

"All of them were suicide bombers. They had weapons and hand grenades."

One policeman was killed and two wounded in the clash on Sunday, he said.

During the Saturday night attack on the airport, three rockets slammed into a nearby residential area. Health and police officials said at least four civilians had been killed and 45 wounded in the flurry of blasts and gunshots.

Authorities sealed off the airport, which handles military and civilian traffic, during the attack and suspended flights.

The gritty streets of Peshawar, the gateway to the Khyber Pass and Afghanistan beyond, have often been shaken by bomb attacks and shootings, but residents said this was the first significant raid on the heavily guarded airport.

Wine tasting in Cochin | lizcleere.com

Wine is expensive in Kerala, the bottles often tucked away on dusty back shelves of shops and seen only in tourist places. ?What wine do you have?? in restaurants and bars is usually answered with a shrug, or the production of a glass of local brownish port-like syrup. So it?s not every day you get an invitation to a wine tasting in Cochin.

They are ambivalent about their alcohol in Kerala. It is only available to purchase from state-run liquor stores which dole out up to a maximum of two bottles (beer, cheap rum, branded spirits) to each customer. Unless you are prepared to pay London prices in the of bars of top tourist hotels, beer and spirits may be consumed only behind blacked-out windows away from public view. Like the opium dens of history, these unprepossessing ?bars? are often mournful affairs where men (if there is a woman there, she?ll be a tourist) enjoy their drug in darkness. And yet, the large Christian section of society enjoys a drink, and most wealthy homes will have status products like Johnny Walker or Remy Martin on display. But seldom wine.

Then along comes someone like Amit Chavan from the United Spirits group. His remit? To educate India, and particularly the south, about wine. And he knows his stuff. Several years studying in England, at college then in the kitchens of British greats like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, have given Amit an evangelical belief in the benefits of wine. By swapping to wine from spirits, and by drinking wine with food, he claims Indians will come to embrace wine in the future. But for now, he is starting small, with just two wines from the Four Seasons stable being promoted in Kerala: Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.

The ?terroir?

He started his presentation with a map of the wine producing nations of the world. There are two clear demarcation areas: between 30? and 50? north Europe dominates the map; between 30? and 50? south New Zealand, South Africa and South America make up the rest of the big groups. The US and India were picked out in the middle section, neither situated where the ideal weather conditions are found. But both these countries contain areas which mimic the more ideal temperate zones. Around Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, where the altitude is 800m above sea-level, winters and summers are mild.

The soil differs from region to region, even within countries, from loose and pebbly to rich and moist. When a vine?s roots have burrowed their way through sand, silt, clay or other minerals, shared space with the organic matter of living and dead organisms and threaded their way through fungi and bacteria, it is unsurprising they will absorb some of the essence of these elements. The flavour and aroma of the grape will also be affected by other factors like sunlight, altitude and rainfall, and this is the ?terroir? which gives each growing district its distinct flavour.

Varieties vs varietals

Jamie tries the Shiraz

Being an enthusiastic, but not particularly well informed consumer of wine, I was surprised to learn that there are 400 grape varieties, give or take, around the world. I had thought there were fewer. In India they work with just twelve. Amit also talked about ?varietals?, which are different to varieties. A ?variety? describes a particular grape; wine made from that particular grape is a varietal (so one ?variety? can make lots of ?varietals?). Quite often different grapes are blended to make one wine (but I don?t know if these have yet another special word, ?varietettes? perhaps?)

Cork and decant or screw-cap and out the bottle?

Amit about corks vs caps (both are good, but if a wine bottle has a cork in it make sure it is stored properly, on its side at an angle, so that the cork is covered in wine ? this reduces the chance of oxidisation). And, do you decant your wine, or is it just the wine snobs who do this? Like most wine-related questions there is no easy answer. As a rule of thumb, if the wine is light, like Merlot, it is best drunk straight from the bottle (perhaps with the intermediary of a glass), whereas a fully, more matured wine does well in a decanter where the sediment can be left behind in the decanting process. For more on decanting, try this piece by the Guardian.

?It smells like wine?

Before we began what we?d all come for, Amit gave us the basic tools for learning to ?taste? wine.

Look
Describe the colour. Deep and plummy or, light and transparent?
Does it have any ?legs?? Place the glass on the table and swirl it. The wine caught on the side will slide down, showing its legs. The faster the legs appear, the lower the viscosity and the ?lighter? the wine.
Tip the glass at an angle and look at the outer rim. If it is colourless, or watery, it is fresh.

Smell
Put your nose into the glass and inhale. Is it fruity, if so what fruits spring to mind? Are there a range of smells?

Taste
Take a sip and hold it in your mouth, swirling it round your tongue so that you can taste for sweetness (tip), bitterness (back), salt and sour flavours. He didn?t mention the more recently recognised flavour of umami. I guess a umami-flavoured wine might not be great?

Then the wine caps were unscrewed (corks are a general no-no in India because too many bottles get destroyed on the shelves).

Chenin Blanc
Ignoring the white wine glasses, the waiter was drawn to the outsize red wine glasses which dominated the table ?(the waiters at the Dream Hotel need some one-to-one tuition from Amit). Jamie managed to switch our glasses just in time, avoiding any spillage and leaving the waiter wondering why we preferred the obviously inferior, small glasses. Later, Amit came to the table. He sighed.

?And that one,? he pointed at a round bowl shaped glass, the kind you see in pubs, ?is for serving orange juice, don?t know why it is even here.?

He told us he had explained to someone which glass was for red and which for white, but it looked like the message hadn?t been decanted.

I regarded the familiar yellowy-gold liquid. Chenin Blanc has never been my favourite: too much going on, too much sweet and salt. A man on the next table, when asked to describe what he smelt, said ?wine?. To me, it smelt like a desert wine, that honey-apricot smell of Muscat de Beaume de Venise, mango, a whole tropical fruit salad of flavours. I liked that smell. The taste was hurricane force, whirling in all directions. It didn?t know if it wanted to be sweet or sour. I didn?t like it. Then something strange happened. I took a mouthful of the tandoori-cooked seerfish the waiter had put onto my side plate. Sublime. The wine tasted different. Suddenly, those over-the-top flavours combined with the spices in the fish and my mouth was in heaven. I tried more wine. I liked it. More food arrived, typical spicy dishes of paneer and chicken this time. The wine tasted great and took on a whole new complexion. Next time I?m in a restaurant eating spicy food, I?ll be asking for some Chenin Blanc, please.

Shiraz
Next up was the second bottle on offer, a Shiraz. I like Shiraz. The waiter re-appeared with more glasses, this time the right shape and size. The colour was deep and purple, there was a watery rim and the swirl produced legs. I smelt? well, wine. I tried again. Then I tasted it. Did I get the pepper, smoke and leather, spices, raspberries and plum it claimed was there? Probably, but by now I was rinsing and gargling with it and no longer cared.

And what about my original question? Petite Sirah is a red herring, a different variety to Shiraz and Syrah.?The Europeans call it Syrah, everyone else calls it Shiraz. They may be made from the same grape, but I have learnt that a Syrah grown on the plains of France will have a different flavour to a Shiraz from Oz. It?s all to do with the ?terroir?, you see?

Baby boomer Sam Irwin discovers success as fiction writer

?
Like many baby boomers, Sam Irwin?s career path has seen some zigs and zags over the years. History teacher, grocery store manager, tour guide, crawfish buyer ? you get the picture. But, then, his computer opened up his true calling in life ? fiction writer ? and, as a lifelong resident of southern Louisiana, he?s full of stories. Here is his latest which originally appeared in Country Roads Magazine.

How to skin a catfish: And the other simple joys of my childhood

Writer Sam Irwin

Writer Sam Irwin

I grew up in the Poor Man?s Provence.

That is the appellation columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson used to describe Henderson, a fishing community in St. Martin Parish, in her book Poor Man?s Provence.

She got the poor man part right?most of Henderson?s families eked out a living determined by the rise and fall of the Atchafalaya River.

Her Provence concept was a state of mind and I understood what she meant, but I?ve traveled through France?s Provence and Henderson does not look anything like the south of France.

Henderson did sound like France, however.

French was routinely spoken at Amy?s Grocery, my grandfather?s grocery store. (Pronounce it Ah-me, Cajun-style). Poppa?s store was located at the end of Highway 352, the last stop before the Atchafalaya Basin levee. You could pick up the food basics (Evangeline Maid bread, lunch meat, Mello Joy coffee) the drink basics (Pearl and Jax beer, distilled water), hardware, socks, shoes, a fresh Hav-a-Hank handkerchief, some marshmallow peanuts, gasoline and coal oil.

The store was also fully stocked with fishing tackle for the commercial fishermen who lived in Henderson or the weekend sport fishermen who drove in from Lafayette and beyond.

Amy's Grocery

Amy?s Grocery ? long ago.

If I could take a part of my life and wrap it up like a Christmas present it would be the time I spent in Poppa?s fish market, a place we called the fish dock. Located directly behind the grocery store, Poppa bought hundreds of pounds of catfish, buffalo carp and gaspergou on a daily basis. Most of the fish was sold wholesale to out of town interests, because you can?t sell fish to a town of fishermen. The French flowed freely around the big scale that could weigh up to three hundred pounds of fish at a time.

Still, I never, ever compared Henderson to Provence. With its numerous restaurants, honkytonks, boat landings, one stops, bars and camps lining the gravel road all the way to Butte La Rose, and the wilderness beyond the levee, I likened the area more to the Badlands I heard so much about in the Westerns I saw at the Jeff Theater.

Back-breaking work of hauling in catfish from the waters of southern Louisiana.

Back-breaking work of hauling in catfish from the waters of southern Louisiana.

Late at night, tucked deeply into my grandmother?s front room bed, I could hear the soft bass of Allons Danser, Colinda thumping from the jukebox at Robin?s Dance Hall across the street. No telling what kind of romantic liaisons and heartbreaks occurred on that corn-mealed dance floor. No telling how many ducks, deer and undersized bass were taken in the wilderness on the sly despite the best efforts of game wardens and parish deputies. No telling how many reckless boaters violating no-wake zones went unreported.

Henderson, my so-called Badlands, was left to police itself, and nothing too bad ever really happened except in the outlaw imagination of a kid who had watched too many episodes of Wagon Train. Henderson?s environment was wild, but its life was not necessarily woolly.

Before Henderson?s fish economy gave way to the crawfish business, my single most pleasurable experience was watching Lionel Hayes, Poppa?s right hand man, skin a catfish or gut a gou. Depending on how the customer wanted his fish dressed determined the level of seafood processing. Naturally, most wanted the catfish skinned, and often with the whiskered head still attached. A few skilled surgical incisions and Lionel denuded the cat of its skin and entrails in minutes?a thing of beauty to a ten-year-old boy. But the most exciting thing ever was to watch him wield the razor-sharp hatchet and guillotine the soon-to-be-cooked fish.

Exclusive: Live from Baku, where Zubin Mehta wept as Galina lay ...

Special correspondent Anna Blundy (l., in the white mink*) reports for Slipped Disc from the Rostropovich Festival in his home town, Baku:

Last Saturday night in the Heydar Aliyev Palace, Baku, Azerbaijan, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta, took to the stage under a vast poster of Mstislav Rostropovich as part of Baku?s VIth annual Rostropovich festival, this year marking the 85th?anniversary of the cellist and conductor?s birth in the city. Olga Rostropovich, his daughter, was in the audience, bravely fulfilling her duties as President of the Rostropovich Fund, though her mother, the legendary soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, was known to be extremely ill in Moscow and fading fast.

Vishnevskaya, 86, had been in hospital in Germany but, on Saturday, December 8th, with hope for her recovery dimming, she was brought home to her dacha in Zhukovo, outside Moscow. This was the dacha where Solzhenistyn had sought shelter in the early 1970s, for which charitable act the Rostropovich family were eventually exiled from the Soviet Union only to return after its collapse. So turbulent was Vishnevskaya?s life as a soprano that she once said to me in interview at her Opera Centre in Moscow that her main advice to young singers; ?If you can not sing, don?t.?

Baku fretted all week that Olga Rostropovich might not make it to for the festival. The week?s concerts, including a staggering performance by Maxim Vengerov, were tinged with sadness and a bleak anticipation. As Mehta swept up onto the rostrum for the encore on Saturday, he turned to the audience and said, in English: ?I dedicate this piece to my dear friend, Galina Vishnevskaya.? He was tearful as he raised the baton and everyone who knew how ill Vishnevskaya now was, wept. The encore was a fragment from Verdi?s Ballo in Maschera. Afterwards, when Mehta turned to us to bow, he was plainly crying.

The following evening, December 9th, before the grand finale, Olga Rostropovich took to the stage to talk about her late father?s love for his birthplace, Baku, and her ongoing relationship with Azerbaijan. Her pain at celebrating her father?s genius in Baku with close family friend Zubin Mehta while her mother was ill in Moscow was visible. When I asked her if it was hard to have to mourn her father, who died in 2007, in such a public way she said; ?I don?t mourn. He is still alive in his music, and in our hearts. I am a cellist so I am in touch with him like that too. He was a believer and I am a believer. Of course, it?s sad sometimes, when I think of what he didn?t have time do and of what I maybe didn?t do or say. But I know he is up there, in a better place, making sure everything is in order for the rest of us. Waiting for us. He is very organized!? Her eyes filled with tears. Two days later Galina Vishnevskaya joined her beloved husband in that better place.
