Novel wireless brain sensor

Feb. 28, 2013 ? In a significant advance for brain-machine interfaces, engineers at Brown University have developed a novel wireless, broadband, rechargeable, fully implantable brain sensor that has performed well in animal models for more than a year. They describe the result in the Journal of Neural Engineering and at a conference this week.

A team of neuroengineers based at Brown University has developed a fully implantable and rechargeable wireless brain sensor capable of relaying real-time broadband signals from up to 100 neurons in freely moving subjects. Several copies of the novel low-power device, described in the Journal of Neural Engineering, have been performing well in animal models for more than year, a first in the brain-computer interface field. Brain-computer interfaces coud help people with severe paralysis control devces with their thoughts.

Arto Nurmikko, professor of engineering at Brown University who oversaw the device's invention, is presenting it this week at the 2013 International Workshop on Clinical Brain-Machine Interface Systems in Houston.

"This has features that are somewhat akin to a cell phone, except the conversation that is being sent out is the brain talking wirelessly," Nurmikko said.

Neuroscientists can use such a device to observe, record, and analyze the signals emitted by scores of neurons in particular parts of the animal model's brain.

Meanwhile, wired systems using similar implantable sensing electrodes are being investigated in brain-computer interface research to assess the feasibility of people with severe paralysis moving assistive devices like robotic arms or computer cursors by thinking about moving their arms and hands.

This wireless system addresses a major need for the next step in providing a practical brain-computer interface," said neuroscientist John Donoghue, the Wriston Professor of Neuroscience at Brown University and director of the Brown Institute for Brain Science.

Tightly packed technology

In the device, a pill-sized chip of electrodes implanted on the cortex sends signals through uniquely designed electrical connections into the device's laser-welded, hermetically sealed titanium "can." The can measures 2.2 inches (56 mm) long, 1.65 inches (42 mm) wide, and 0.35 inches (9 mm) thick. That small volume houses an entire signal processing system: a lithium ion battery, ultralow-power integrated circuits designed at Brown for signal processing and conversion, wireless radio and infrared transmitters, and a copper coil for recharging -- a "brain radio." All the wireless and charging signals pass through an electromagnetically transparent sapphire window.

In all, the device looks like a miniature sardine can with a porthole.

But what the team has packed inside makes it a major advance among brain-machine interfaces, said lead author David Borton, a former Brown graduate student and postdoctoral research associate who is now at Ecole Polytechnique Federale Lausanne in Switzerland.

"What makes the achievement discussed in this paper unique is how it integrated many individual innovations into a complete system with potential for neuroscientific gain greater than the sum of its parts," Borton said. "Most importantly, we show the first fully implanted microsystem operated wirelessly for more than 12 months in large animal models -- a milestone for potential [human] clinical translation."

The device transmits data at 24 Mbps via 3.2 and 3.8 Ghz microwave frequencies to an external receiver. After a two-hour charge, delivered wirelessly through the scalp via induction, it can operate for more than six hours.

"The device uses less than 100 milliwatts of power, a key figure of merit," Nurmikko said.

Co-author Ming Yin, a Brown postdoctoral scholar and electrical engineer, said one of the major challenges that the team overcame in building the device was optimizing its performance given the requirements that the implant device be small, low-power and leak-proof, potentially for decades.

"We tried to make the best tradeoff between the critical specifications of the device, such as power consumption, noise performance, wireless bandwidth and operational range," Yin said. "Another major challenge we encountered was to integrate and assemble all the electronics of the device into a miniaturized package that provides long-term hermeticity (water-proofing) and biocompatibility as well as transparency to the wireless data, power, and on-off switch signals."

With early contributions by electrical engineer William Patterson at Brown, Yin helped to design the custom chips for converting neural signals into digital data. The conversion has to be done within the device, because brain signals are not produced in the ones and zeros of computer data.

Ample applications

The team worked closely with neurosurgeons to implant the device in three pigs and three rhesus macaque monkeys. The research in these six animals has been helping scientists better observe complex neural signals for as long as 16 months so far. In the new paper, the team shows some of the rich neural signals they have been able to record in the lab. Ultimately this could translate to significant advances that can also inform human neuroscience.

Current wired systems constrain the actions of research subjects, Nurmikko said. The value of wireless transmission is that it frees subjects to move however they intend, allowing them to produce a wider variety of more realistic behaviors. If neuroscientists want to observe the brain signals produced during some running or foraging behaviors, for instance, they can't use a cabled sensor to study how neural circuits would form those plans for action and execution or strategize in decision making.

In the experiments in the new paper, the device is connected to one array of 100 cortical electrodes, the microscale individual neural listening posts, but the new device design allows for multiple arrays to be connected, Nurmikko said. That would allow scientists to observe ensembles of neurons in multiple related areas of a brain network.

The new wireless device is not approved for use in humans and is not used in clinical trials of brain-computer interfaces. It was designed, however, with that translational motivation.

"This was conceived very much in concert with the larger BrainGate* team, including neurosurgeons and neurologists giving us advice as to what were appropriate strategies for eventual clinical applications," said Nurmikko, who is also affiliated with the Brown Institute for Brain Science.

Borton is now spearheading the development of a collaboration between EPFL and Brown to use a version of the device to study the role of the motor cortex in an animal model of Parkinson's disease.

Meanwhile the Brown team is continuing work on advancing the device for even larger amounts of neural data transmission, reducing its size even further, and improving other aspects of the device's safety and reliability so that it can someday be considered for clinical application in peop0le with movement disabilities.

In addition to Nurmikko, Borton and Yin, the paper was also co-authored by Juan Aceros, an expert in mechanical engineering.

The National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (Grant 1R01EB007401-01), with partial support from the National Science Foundation (Grants: 0937848) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Contract: N66001-10-C-2010), funded the research.

United removing Boeing 787 from flight plans

(Reuters) - United Continental Holdings said on Thursday it was taking Boeing Co's grounded 787 Dreamliner out of its flying plans through June 5, except for a Denver-to-Tokyo route scheduled for a tentative launch in May.

United's decision came as a Japanese investigation of a fuel leak on a Dreamliner operated by Japan Airlines Co Ltd (JAL) indicated the cause to be a coating around the mechanism that controls fuel movement between tanks.

Japanese officials launched the investigation after two fuel leaks on the JAL 787, just days before authorities around the world grounded the new lightweight passenger jets over battery failures that sparked fires on two planes in January.

Japanese authorities still have not found the cause of the battery issue.

Airlines operating 787s are setting schedules for coming months while still uncertain about when the plane will be able to resume service following the fleet's grounding five weeks ago.

Boeing is due to meet with the head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Friday to present measures designed to prevent further battery failures, a source told Reuters, even though the root cause of the electrical problem has not been determined.

United spokeswoman Christen David said in a statement on Thursday that the carrier's Denver to Tokyo Narita International route, originally set to start March 31, had been postponed to May 12.

The launch would ultimately depend on a successful resolution of the safety incidents that have grounded the 787. Other service with the 787 won't resume until after June 5, David said.

"We are taking the 787 out of our schedule through June 5, except for Denver-Narita, which will tentatively launch on May 12," United's statement said.

MAINTAINING DIALOGUE

Boeing said it was maintaining communication with United as the plane maker develops a plan to resume 787 service. "We deeply regret the impact the recent events have had on the schedule for United and their customers," Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said in an emailed comment.

United's statement doesn't mean that the 787 won't be ready to fly again before June 5, said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets.

Rather, it means United will not put the jet into service before then. If the plane is available sooner but United cannot use it on its scheduled routes, Boeing likely would have to pay United compensation that Leake estimates at about $800,000 a month, based on lease rates.

"This does not tell you that Boeing's plane is grounded until June," he said. "It tells you that Boeing's costs to United could be as if it's grounded until June."

A "superbox" to contain the battery or some other fix "might come sooner, but United is not paying" to have the jet until after June 5, he added.

In a similar move, Poland's national airline LOT said last week that it would not use the 787 before October and that it is seeking compensation from Boeing .

"Airlines don't make money while their planes are on the ground," said Morningstar airline analyst Basili Alukos.

United is the only U.S. carrier currently operating the 787 and has six of the planes, worth $207 million apiece at list prices. JAL and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have nearly half of the 50 jets delivered to airlines so far.

Japan's Transport Ministry said it believed the manufacturing process led to deficiencies in the way electrical-insulating coating was applied to the mechanism that opened and closed the fuel-tank valve.

Investigators also found foreign matter on a switch that operated the same mechanism, causing it to send a signal that the valve was closed when it was still half open -- leading to the leak.

The ministry said four Dreamliners in Japan, two from JAL and two from ANA, might be affected by the manufacturing process.

Ten Years Ago Today from the Washington Post: '2-Week Window Frames Bush's Decision on War'

February 18th, 2013 11:10 PM

The Washington Post ran this front page article referring with no caveats to Saddam Hussein's "chemical and biological weapons" exactly ten years to the day before printing quotes from a made up "interview" Michael Moore supposedly gave to an Iranian magazine

2-Week Window Frames Bush's Decision on War

February 18, 2003, Page A1

By Mike Allen and Karen DeYoung, Washington Post Staff Writers

President Bush plans at least two more weeks of diplomacy before deciding whether to attack Iraq and may support a deadline for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to visibly destroy his chemical and biological weapons, administration officials said yesterday.

Officials said the United States and Britain are likely to push for an enforcement resolution in the U.N. Security Council this week. One option under consideration was a demand for "actual disarmament" by Iraq within a specified number of days, a senior administration official said.

"It would say, 'This is your last window,' " the official said.

Meeting in Brussels yesterday, the 15 European Union leaders agreed that U.N. weapons inspectors should be given more time to find and destroy Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, and declared that a war against Iraq "should be used only as a last resort." [Details, Page A17.]

Officials here and in London discussed how to regain momentum lost last week, when chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix told the Security Council that progress was being made, even though Baghdad was still not cooperating fully with disarmament demands. A majority of council members, including France, Russia, China and Germany, said that inspections should be given more time before there was any consideration of the use of military force.

As the administration has tried to sustain pressure on Iraq, it often has implied during the past two months that a final deadline was near. Officials suggested yesterday that Bush's rough timetable has always been slightly longer than many diplomats assumed when he announced Jan. 30 that the issue of how to deal with Hussein would be resolved in "a matter of weeks, not months."

But this time, the administration appears to have left little room for retreat from a timetable heading toward a final decision in about two weeks. National security adviser Condoleezza Rice on Sunday implied that what she called a "diplomatic window" would close following the next Security Council meeting at the end of this month, when members will again hear an assessment from Blix of Iraqi cooperation. She was dismissive of a French suggestion that the council schedule yet another meeting on March 14.

U.S. and British military deployments to the Persian Gulf region will then have reached levels more than adequate for an attack by early to mid-March. Although senior military officials have said that troops could remain in the region for "months" without any action, planners have expressed concern about fighting in the intense heat that falls over the region in early spring.

While the administration has consistently maintained that it does not need another Security Council resolution to launch an attack against Iraq, it has so far bowed to the wishes of Britain and Spain, its two main council allies. Dozens of other countries whose support the administration has claimed also have said they would prefer a U.N. imprimatur on any action.

In addition to a possible final deadline for Iraq, other possible provisions for a new resolution include declaring that Iraq already has violated the November council demand that it disarm immediately and completely. The resolution would not spell out any consequences requiring members to agree to military action, but the administration would assert that such approval was implied. Officials said they are not interested in a scenario where a further debate about the consequences would begin after a deadline or final "material breach" had been decided.

Among the tests for Iraq that officials are considering is insistence that weapons scientists and technicians be allowed to travel outside the country for interviews with U.N. inspectors. But administration officials, while saying it might be possible to write a list of tasks tightly enough, expressed misgivings about the deadline approach.

Some pointed out that Bush might find himself in a box if Hussein complied. The real fear, a senior official said, is that even the appearance of compliance would encourage council members who have already said they believe progress is being made. Also, Bush's aides have said repeatedly that Iraqi cooperation thus far has been focused on process, such as allowing the inspectors access to suspected weapons sites, while the administration wants results on substance, such as the voluntary giving up and destruction of weapons it says Iraq is concealing.

The administration is hesitant to lobby for a new list of procedural demands, officials said, and is concerned that Iraq would use such an approach to further delay the process with attempts to negotiate. "The question is: Are they able to do enough on each [demand] to give the appearance of complying?" an official said. "You agree in principle, and then they try to drag it out for months."

But while all the diplomatic options have drawbacks, the administration also believes that a new resolution could greatly expand the support, including financial contributions, that the United States would receive from other nations for a post-Hussein occupation and reconstruction of Iraq.? Officials made it clear that Bush is going to continue to work with the United Nations for several more weeks, after which he is prepared to go to war without U.N. approval if he is convinced no headway is being made, they said.

Bush's aides insisted that he will not be slowed down by opposition that was clear in Friday's Security Council meeting, or by the millions of protesters around the world who marched against war over the weekend. They said he is continuing to make alternative diplomatic and military plans in case the council fails to approve a resolution endorsing an attack on Iraq, his aides said.

"Sometimes the demonstration of pursuing the alternative plans helps push the likelihood of a resolution," the senior official said, adding that the alternative plans nevertheless are very real.

Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said after meeting with Bush at the White House yesterday that "time is very short, and I think that we will be seeing developments within a matter of weeks." Bush "has reaffirmed his commitment and sees it as the responsibility of the United States to guarantee that Saddam Hussein is disarmed," the Latvian leader said in the snowy White House driveway. "And he says, 'We will see to it. We will do it.' "

Bush's meeting yesterday was indicative of the attention he is lavishing on smaller nations as he builds his coalition in the face of resistance from several of the traditional powers of western Europe. Latvia, a former Soviet republic, is one of 10 Central and Eastern European nations that have publicly expressed support for Bush's approach to Iraqi disarmament.

Bush's week of heavy diplomacy includes a meeting Wednesday in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General George Robertson. On Saturday, at his ranch in Crawford, Tex., he will consult with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, and the two will hold a joint news conference.

The Passing of a Dharma Friend ? Ah! Dharma reflections based on ...

By Clemma Dawsen

I?m here to talk to you on behalf of our tiny sangha in rural Vermont and how

together we experienced the teachings of Anyen Rinpoche in a very immediate way as

we shared in the dying of one of our members. It?s our hope that reading this will give

you an idea of how amazing and beautiful and possible it is to die with confidence. We

should all aspire to be surrounded by trusted dharma friends. One of life?s greatest gifts

is to be a dharma friend; if you are asked to be one you should have no doubt as to

your good fortune. As the hours and days passed leading up to Bob?s death, tangible

benefits of each of our particular practices arose spontaneously and we came to a

greater understanding of how important the sangha truly is. No matter how large or

small, no matter the level of expertise of its members, the sangha holds things together.

?

I dedicate the merit of writing this story to Bob?s wife, Sally, who by selflessly

opening her heart as her beloved Bob was dying offered each of us the opportunity

to accrue astoundingly good karma and gain the depth of understanding that can

only come from experience. May she be strengthened and blessed with clear vision

for her future. It?s her wish and ours that continuous benefit radiate in ever widening

circles from our sangha to yours and beyond. On behalf of our sangha, I offer deepest

gratitude to Anyen Rinpoche for first accepting Bob and Sally?s invitation to come to

Vermont, and for supporting us from afar as he traveled to Bodhgaya at the time of

Bob?s passing; and to Ven. Konchog Norbu who committed to Sally in October that he

would return to Vermont to be with Bob in his final days and made good on his promise.

His gentle presence and pure honesty gave us all room to simply be.

?

As one friend wrote from Colorado upon Bob?s passing, ??I am so deeply touched

to see Rinpoche?s vision? for sangha to come together and transform the experience of death-

- happen for Bob and Sally. We may not have all the skills yet, but the compassion and loving

motivation to help is flowing from your hearts. Thank you all so much. Those of you who have

been with Bob and Sally this past week wrote such beautiful poetry about your experience?it

seemed quite magical. You were obviously surrounded with Buddha?s blessings. And Bob gave

us a gift from his heart as well. His practice over the years supported him even when his mental

faculties could not??

?

Bob was diagnosed with Alzheimer?s disease in 2010. By last fall he was failing

fast and yet still eagerly wished to be with Rinpoche and attend Level I Phowa training

in Manchester. Although he did not express it in words, it seems Bob had chosen to

prepare for death. Sally, ever devoted, set out purposefully to see him through.

At the retreat Bob?s open-hearted acceptance of the compassion we showed

toward him opened our hearts to receive his in return. It works that way. Those of us

who knew him, as well as those who traveled from all over the U.S. and Canada to

attend the training were blessed by his company. While he struggled to remember

names and faces, directions and schedules, Bob somehow remained more present

than seemed possible, more present at times than those of us consciously aiming to be.

Whenever I was with him, I understood bodhichitta in a way I never had before.

On the final day of the retreat, each of us came quietly forward with bowed heads

and folded hands to receive Rinpoche?s blessing. When it came time for Bob to step

up, he raised his head and approached Rinpoche with a determined step and an open

smile. Before Rinpoche could extend his colorfully wrapped bamboo staff to bless Bob

with a touch or a tap, Bob reached out with both hands, seized hold of the staff and held

fast. The long moment that followed enveloped us all as we were suspended in pure

dharma. It was as if Rinpoche and Bob formed the center of a great lotus while the rest

of us became in turn its many petals, fanned out in translucent light that could not be

contained by mere walls.

?

It was an image I returned to time and again in the weeks that followed the

retreat as Bob began to fragment into ever more random bits of being. Sally continued

to be his anchor but was at times fraught with despair and exhaustion. At times fearful,

agitated and confused, Bob could also become very angry, or simply seem to disappear

altogether. When he was hospitalized yet again in late December, it seemed logical to

use the time to figure out how to not bring him home this time, to find somewhere to

?place? him. People on all sides encouraged Sally to take this obvious next step. Sally

however, was not so sure. In fact, she was pretty much against it right along.

Over the next couple of weeks, as Sally agonized over what to do we shared

her uncertainty. We continued to meet as a sangha, to offer prayers and dedicate

merit. This was to prove especially crucial during this painful and tumultuous phase of Bob?s

dying. We Westerners are prone to getting into our heads, bypassing our hearts when

decisions have to be made until the balance is so skewed we abandon logic and swing

to the other side, often making rash choices based purely in emotion. Yet the teachings

remind us again and again to maintain mindfulness and discernment so as to balance

the logic of our heads with the loving kindness of our hearts.

?

This is why we take refuge in the sangha. It?s critical that we do this as

practitioners; otherwise confusion will reign, and lead inevitably to more uncertainty and

doubt. Sally needed support for her practice in order to keep her heart open and her

mind clear. The sangha needed to practice together to build confidence in our ability to

be present for Bob and Sally. Our busy lives somehow supported rather than thwarted

our endeavors, dishing up the sort of signs we needed that we were doing it, we were

being mindful, living our practice in the day-to-day, seeing how the dharma permeates

everything and everyone. Instead of falling further into doubt, one day in early January

Sally simply knew what she had to do. She took a leave of absence from work and

brought Bob home to die.

?

What we had talked about for months?the inevitability of Bob?s passing and our

sangha?s role in the process?was suddenly upon us. Sally prepared a room for Bob

based on what Rinpoche?s teachings said would support his passing. A fire burned

gently in the glass-fronted stove at the foot of the bed, candles and flowers adorned

the room and a small shrine upon which she placed photos of Bob?s teachers and other

personal dharma objects stood against the wall. Entering their home, one was met with

profound peace and a sense of everything being in right order and ready for what was

to come.

?

Jan. 16 ?

Sally (in an email to us):

? A soft snow is falling this morning; the wood stove is stoked, sending light and warmth into

the darkened room. I have again awakened with anxiety mixed with peace. I get up each

morning around five or six giving myself time to have coffee and some time alone. I try to sit on

the cushion each morning, either chanting the Heart Sutra or the Meditation on the

Compassionate One. Often my thoughts intrude, and getting down into that deeper state seems

impossible, I practice breathing in and out, feeling my heart pounding in my chest, I then wait to

hear sounds from Bob?s room. Yesterday he stood up by himself and opened the door, the day

before I had to wake him up around 8:30 and when I brought him out into the living room his

legs buckled underneath him. He is taking very little food at this point, preferring smoothies

and liquids; he seems to have lost all interest in solids. He spends a good portion of the day

sleeping. Yesterday and the day before he was only up about three hours each day. He is on very

little meds, whereas before we had him on 7.5 mg of an anti-psychotic twice a day, now I only

give him 3.25 once a day when he begins to get confused and seems a bit agitated. Most of the

?time when he is awake he seems to be very present responding to questions with a clear yes or

no, though he speaks only in a whisper and cannot really form more than a one or two word

sentence. Yesterday the visiting nurse came and has recommended that the

hospice nurse evaluate him. I struggle with my own thoughts of wanting this to be

over quickly, for both of our sakes. I have begun to put together a small team to help me and to

also research the legalities for my wishes to have the body home for 3 days after passing and I

have been assured by a funeral director that this is possible, I wish to make this journey as

seamless as possible and feel the prayers and support of all of you.

?

?Jan 16?

A sangha member replies:

?I am able to confirm what Sally feels certain of, that Bob is far more present than he has been

for months. It?s important to look with our hearts to see it?as Sally said in her note this morning,

Bob doesn?t speak above a whisper and spends a great deal of time whispering to himself and

gazing past us into the world that he can see and we cannot. It?s good to talk directly to him,

to not assume he doesn?t hear us?with our hearts we are able to sense what Bob is seeing and

hearing and it?s very peaceful where he is abiding. We can convey that energy to him when

we speak, or as we sit quietly with him we can send him love and clarity for the path. This is

what I wanted to tell you all, that Bob is in a state of grace right now that?s very good. His

eyes are clear and the lines in his face are gone. Although he is very thin, thinner than ever,

there?s ?more? of him than when I saw him last, he seems fuller, more put together. Sally spends

a lot of time chanting and praying with Bob and the energy in the house is sacred and lovely?as

Sally said, it would be a wonderful thing if this were to continue and Bob were able to die this

way without having the agitation and rage return that he was experiencing not long ago. We

have no way of knowing what will come, but can continue to pray and offer whatever we can to

the process; whether in person or from afar. Making Sally laugh felt really good, there needs to

be room for laughter and joy at such a time?remembering that it?s not irreverent to laugh in the

face of death.

?

Sally:

Dear all?on Wednesday afternoon Bob went to bed at 4:30 and the next day I was not able

to arouse him, he has been semi-comatose/sleeping since, and is now actively dying. Rinpoche

is in Bodhgaya and is offering prayers along with 3000 other monks and tulkus. I am piecing

together necessary details while supporting his process. I will keep you posted?

?

Jan. 20?

Sally:

?Konchog (Ven. Konchog Norbu) is here and is staying for the duration, he is in the room

with Bob chanting, we are so blessed, please come when you can, much love to all..Bob

still comfortable?hospice came this morning?

?

Jan. 20?

A sangha member:

This afternoon at Sally and Bob?s house, it was clear that Bob?s condition has declined

dramatically since I last saw him?The earth and water elements appear to have dissolved, Bob

continues his journey toward the bardos.

Konchog, who arrived last night, is staying at the house. I found him seated at Bob?s bedside,

reading aloud from the Tibetan Book of the Dead. During the afternoon, Bob and Sally?s

daughters and families arrived. While strong winds blow through the surrounding hills and

forest, the air within the house is still and rich with compassion, acceptance and strength. When

I told Bob that he was in Rinpoche?s prayers from Bhodgaya, his reaction was immediate and

unmistakable.

It?s clear that Bob is an extremely fortunate being. Sally?s immense courage, great heart, and

dedication to the dharma have allowed this gentle soul to leave this world with unmatched love

and support. We are privileged to be able to share in their journey.

?

Jan. 21

Konchog:

Bob passed so peacefully in the lion posture at 7:41pm EST, on this, the 10th day of Guru

Rinpoche. Just before he passed, his eyes, which had been closed for days, opened, directed

at the candle Rinpoche had told us to place in his view, set up as an offering to an image of

Amitabha in Dewachen. A light snow had just begun to fall. Sally and the two children they had

together were here, emotional, but holding it together pretty well. After his last breath, I lightly

tapped at his fontanel, said Amitabha?s name many times, and sang his mantra. I then read

the Heart Sutra and Karma Chagmed?s ?Prayer to be Reborn in Dewachen,? made incense and

light offerings with Atisha?s extensive light offering prayer, and all of us together did the simple

reading for the first three days of death. Now we are notifying various people while a lovely

recording of the Mani mantra plays for Bob.

?

Sally had already arranged for Bob?s body to remain undisturbed for 3 days

before being removed for cremation, so when he died the stove was shut down and the

window opened to invite the chill air. The vigil began. Over the next 3 days, Konchog

and Sally remained a steady presence while others from our sangha and from Sally

and Bob?s family came and went, taking turns snugged in a heavy coat or wrapped in

a blanket to sit with Bob?s body. The sacred space that Sally had prepared for Bob was

now fiercely cold and yet magically warm and inviting; lit with candles, fragrant with

incense. Bob?s body, too, was a comforting presence rather than something strange or

off-putting. Outside the open window, chimes hanging from the eaves lightly sounded in

the breeze. On Wednesday night, 2 days after his outer breath had ceased, our sangha

met at Sally and Bob?s house as a group and sat together with Bob?s body. Konchog led

us in the specific prayers that Rinpoche instructed us to use.

?

On Friday the body was removed for cremation and on Saturday, January 23,

a ceremony of remembrance was held for Bob at the Manchester Shambhala Center,

lovingly adorned for the occasion. The service was a simple, moving event filled with

prayers and ritual befitting the final days of Bob?s life. As with all aspects of Bob?s

passing, the day itself was auspicious, being the full moon Amitabha day. The room

was packed; some guests on cushions, others in chairs or standing, squeezed in

and familiar with one another if only for the hour. Many had never been to a Buddhist

ceremony of any kind; if they felt awkward upon arrival their awkwardness quickly gave

way to a sense of openness and peaceful acceptance. Toddlers wandered through

the crowd, laughing and chattering. Babies were held gently in loving arms. The sense

that we were all being held in fact, was much like the moment at the retreat when Bob

received his blessing from Rinpoche. When nothing separates who we are from what

we do, everything is sacred. Dharma readings and prayers, music, poetry and loving

words mingled as deeply as the styles and hearts of the people in attendance. People

remarked later on that it was like being suspended in time.

?

Bob and Sally?s daughter, Sam, read the words that Sally had written for the?ceremony:

?I would just like to share a little about these last weeks, which have been sad, but also peaceful

?and filled with love. When Bob was in the hospital I was told over and over that he needed to

?be in a nursing home. I got very, very close to putting him in one. I struggled daily with the

?decision but after visiting a nursing home, I realized I couldn?t do this, I couldn?t not bring

?Bob home. So on January third we brought him home, against doctors? advice. He was weak

?and disoriented and was brought home by ambulance. Bobby and I cuddled into bed with him;

?and we were smiling to each other, saying over and over ?you?re home.? Bob was so visibly

happy. Please understand that for someone with Alzheimer?s, it?s hard to show emotion. It?s

all blurred. He knew he was home, that is, he was safe, with family, with us. If he?d been in a

?nursing home, we would have lost him. We would have lost anything of him that we could pull

?back, that we could touch. It would?ve been gone.

?

In these last weeks he seemed to become more lucid, more present, even though

?his ability to communicate was diminished to only a word or two, he seemed softened.

?On Monday the 7th we laid in bed together and we talked; again, you have to understand

?he had lost the ability to speak in sentences of more than one or two words. We talked

?about Alzheimer?s and he said, ?it?s killing me?. I asked him whether he wanted to continue

?to fight this or whether he wanted to just be home, no more hospitals? He said home? I

?said to him a couple of times, ?do you understand what I am saying?? and he said ?yes.? I

?repeated, ?do you understand what I am saying?? and again he said ?yes.? ?later I helped

?him walk out into the living room and when we sat down Bob looked over at me and said, ?talk

?more?? I said to him, ?do you want to fight this, ?cause I will do anything in my power if that is

what you want,??. He nodded his head yes. He immediately looked alarmed and then said to me

?so very clearly ?other, other.? So I said, ?do you just want me to support you spiritually?? His

?face visibly relaxed and he said ?yes, yes??

?

Over the course of the next week Bob stopped eating solids. He slept more and more. On

Wednesday of last week he slipped into a semi-coma. We were told by hospice that he

?probably had less than a week. On Saturday night, Konchog came to be with us and began

?chanting and saying prayers throughout the day and late into the evening. On Monday night

?Bob peacefully died at home with Bobby, Sam, Konchog and I at his side. We continued to say

?prayers for him for the next three days after his passing.

?

This has been an incredible journey; one with acceptance, rawness, beauty, and love, I can?t

?put it all into words. When I was younger I loved Dylan Thomas?s poem ?Do Not Go Gentle into

?That Good Night?, but today?I stand here, older, and a little wiser. Death had always seemed

?a great mystery, full of fear and sadness. Bob has shown us grace, courage and a deep knowing.

?Together with my children and grandchildren we have cried, and laughed, and sobbed and

?prayed and we have learned that this great rite of passage holds unbridled compassion.?

?

After the service, Sally and her family threw a fine party. The Bob I knew was

fond of saying, ?I?m Irish.? He would attach this addendum to the increasingly abstract

things he came up with that nonetheless made perfect sense. We?d be pondering the

dharma and Bob would just come out with something so strangely yet perfectly put

together that we knew exactly what he meant but would be hard pressed to explain it. A

sort of Alzheimer?s koan, if you will. Then he?d get that twinkle in his eye and say, ?Hey,

I?m Irish.? So although he didn?t have the traditional Irish wake, Bob didn?t leave without

a celebration in his honor. Afterwards, we all went home, one by one, back to our lives,

leaving Sally to hers and yet not. The inevitable grace of the sangha remains because

that?s how it is, that?s how it works.

?

?and on January 28th, seven days after Bob?s passing, as I was sitting on the deck early

?one morning, after a deep snow, a small finch lit upon my shoulder. om mani padme hum.

?-Sally Leonard, East Dorset,?Vermont

Why Fewer Mortgage Refinancers Are Opting to ... - AOL Real Estate

Refinancing a mortgageRefinancing a mortgage has become a popular option for current homeowners in the last year or so, as mortgage rates have held steady at well below 4 percent for some time. However, new data show that in general, the number of people who also use the refinancing opportunity to shorten their loan terms is shrinking. In the fourth quarter of last year, the percentage of refinancers who opted to reduce their loan terms along with their interest rates shrank to 27 percent, down slightly from the previous quarter, and significantly on a year-over-year basis, according to new data from the government-sponsored Freddie Mac. For the entire calendar year of 2012, the total amount of refinancers who opted to use the opportunity to reduce their loan terms stood at 29 percent.

"Borrowers with smaller loan balances can shorten their loan term when refinancing with smaller dollar increases in their monthly payment than borrowers with large loan balances," said Freddie Mac chief economist and vice president Frank Nothaft. "That's an important reason why a larger percent of borrowers in a low housing cost market shorten their term when compared to borrowers in very high cost markets."

Interestingly, this trend was particularly evident in major metropolitan areas with low home prices in general, and the opposite was true for cities with higher values, the report said. For instance, in Dallas, 43 percent of those who refinanced also shortened their loan terms. On the other hand, San Francisco saw just 14 percent of refinancers do the same. In addition to those who reduced their loan terms, the vast majority -- 69 percent -- instead decided to keep it the same as it was prior to the refinance, the report said. Another 4 percent chose to make their terms longer. Further, more than 95 percent of those borrowers also chose to rely on fixed-rate loans when refinancing, and this preference was observed among both those who already had FRMs, as well as those who previously had adjustable mortgages instead.

Today, the average refinancers are cutting their mortgage rates by large percentages, as many may have obtained the loans when rates were closer to 5 or 6 percent. By choosing to restructure the terms of their existing loan, they can save themselves thousands of dollars per year in mortgage payments.

Our Assessment:

B+ : has irrepressible appeal

See our review for fuller assessment.

??From the Reviews:
  • "This is a charming and uplifting book, full of exotic Indonesian words, references to Islamic prayer times and ethnic groups that peacefully coexist (Malays, Chinese immigrants, native Sawangs). It makes for a refreshing break from the middle-class navel-gazing of most Western fiction." - The Economist
  • "(O)nce you give yourself over to the fact that this is an entirely earnest tale of perseverance and of chasing impossible dreams, the story skates forth effortlessly and endearingly, and the optimism that Hirata infuses into each of his characters becomes contagious. (...) Like a good fable, the book imparts a simple moral" - Jason Beerman, Toronto Star

The complete review's Review:

???????The Rainbow Troops is narrated by Ikal, and is mainly an account of his school-years on Belitong (Billiton) Island in Indonesia. Almost all the action revolves around the tiny school he attended, Muhammadiyah Elementary School, and his classmates -- a ragtag bunch nicknamed 'Laskar Pelangi' (the "Rainbow Troops") by their teacher. From the beginning, the school's very survival -- and with it the possibility that these children can even get an education -- is in question: the story opens on their first school day, when everyone desperately waits to see whether the necessary minimum of ten children can be found to even keep the school going; later, it is imperiled by the local mining company's interest in the tin on the school grounds.
???????The small island -- which, after all, gave mining giant BHP Billiton its name -- is dominated by tin mining and by PN Timah (now PT Timah), to the extent that Belitong has become more or less "a corporate village". The company staff live in a walled-off and guarded part of the island called the Estate, which is also where the PN School is -- "a place for the best", with all the amenities. Muhammadiyah Elementary School isn't so much a place for the rest as it is the last possible option, and the few children who go here come from extreme poverty -- and even then it is a great sacrifice for their families and them, with one of them bicycling huge distances daily just to get there.
???????Led by an idealistic new teacher, Bu Mus -- herself just fifteen and just out of junior high school -- they are united by a commitment to the school and to learning. It turns out that one among them, Lintang, is exceptionally bright and he becomes their star student; another, Mahar, is artistically very gifted (though he and another student -- the girl Flo, a later addition who fled the PN School -- become rather obsessed with mysticism and the like, eventually losing some of their academic focus).
???????Some of The Rainbow Troops is about perseverance and overcoming obstacles, and there are small triumphs on larger stages, too, in academic contests with other schools and the like -- the long empty trophy case doesn't remain entirely empty -- but it's not entirely a feel-good novel of anything being possible. It is a realistic account -- clearly also autobiographical -- and not all the triumphs are complete, and this attempt to get an education isn't enough to change some of the island fundamentals for the students.
???????The account is very loosely episodic, with little sense of the years that pass. Chapters focus on different events and episodes, with some of the action stretched out over several chapters, but there is only a limited and occasional sense of continuity or personal growth. Along the way there is a variety of action -- encounters with crocodiles, first love, the challenges the school faces just to survive, and more -- even as there is little sense of gradual individual progress, as the story simply jumps from one set of circumstances to the next. The students generally aren't described in much detail, and Ikal's own family and familial circumstances remain almost entirely obscure. While the novel revolves closely around the school (even as quite a bit of the action takes place apart from it), even the teachers come across more as idealized figures rather than tangible characters.
???????The last forty pages of the novel leap ahead -- to 'Twelve Years Later', as Ikal describes his second push at advancement through education, as well as some of what became of the others, a mixed bag of successes and setbacks.
???????As a novel, The Rainbow Troops is a bit of a mess. Structurally it is frailer than the barely-standing structure that houses Muhammadiyah Elementary, especially by the standards of carefully blueprinted MFA-honed American-style works of fiction. Yet there's considerable charm to the irrepressible narrative, too -- winning enough that it, and the colorful exoticism presented here, prove quite captivating. Hirata's controlled tone helps: despite the occasional clich? -- in both style and substance -- there's an agreeable liveliness to the writing. It helps too that it is almost relentlessly upbeat, with little wallowing in any of the abject misery (as would be easy enough to do) or depressing turns (though arguably a bit more focus on the sadder turns might have helped, as this is a story where people who are out of sight are immediately more or less entirely out of mind, and there's practically no long- (or even medium-)term reflection on loss).
???????Ikal is an avid reader, but as with everything else, Hirata does not go into much detail about that. Someone speaks of "the power of literature", but Hirata more or less leaves it at that, Ikal just briefly noting: "Literature, asked my heart, what's that ?" but not dwelling on it then. And while he dabbles in poetry (sending them to his first love) and admits to: "an affinity for writing", Ikal is not one of these characters who lose themselves in fiction (and go on and on about that):

I occupied myself by reading practical psychology books on self-development and becoming more fanatical about John Lennon's inspirational sentence.
???????(The sentence is: "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans !" which Ikal came across in an interview by Lennon in a newspaper clipping.)
???????Ikal believes his strengths are in playing badminton (though that hardly figures in the book) and writing; an amusing aside from the last section of the book describes a last-ditch effort to tie that all up into one big project:
I studied pop culture and trends of personal development to enrich my book. Even its title was impressive: Badminton and Making Friends. Indonesia had never seen a book like that. Unfortunately, based on commercial considerations, there were no publishers willing to print the book. They were more interested in pornographic books full of words like condom, masturbation, and orgasm. Those were more profitable.
???????That even the adult Ikal would not only think of writing but actually complete a book on Badminton and Making Friends gives a good sense of where this novel is coming from. Not quite so far-fetched, The Rainbow Troops is nevertheless equally sincere and idealistic, presenting a world in which everything may not quite be possible, but everyone sure is going to try their darndest. (It also remains the antithesis of those 'pornographic books' that do get published: Ikal feels youthful passion for a girl, but this is a very decorous book, and there's no adolescent lust or adult activity to be found here, as a childish innocence is maintained throughout the book (another reason why there's little sense of the characters growing or maturing in (m)any ways ...).)
???????Yet for all its apparent ingenuousness (and near-relentless good cheer), the novel does not shy away from the reality of the consequences of the lack of educational opportunities in this society. These characters make the best of what is available, idealistic teachers and ambitious students making do with whatever they have -- but that isn't necessarily enough. Hirata (and Hirata-as-Ikal) offer this book as tribute and fulfilled pledge to their teachers, and if its basic message of the importance of education is a familiar one, it is nevertheless presented with more than enough heart, exotic frills, and appealing writing (rough around some of the edges, but still quite winning) to not seem simply a didactic social-moral tale.
???????An interesting glimpse of a slice of (fairly) modern rural Indonesian life, The Rainbow Troops is somewhat basic but also undeniably appealing.

New site by speech therapists helps find apps for therapy and ...

[prMac.com] Surprise, Arizona - Torello Group, LLC has announced the beta launch of YappGuru.com, an app review site created by speech therapists. A unique twist to the traditional community-sourced ratings, Yapp Guru qualifies reviewers as an expert "Savvy Guru" based on a specified level of experience with apps, and links their site reviews directly to their expert's detailed personal blog reviews. Industry keywords for speech/occupational therapy and education find reviews for Kindle, Nook, Android and Apple devices.

The new site, dedicated to the creation and maintenance of an innovative software application resource for speech- language pathologists, occupational therapists, educators, technology experts and parents, is available for a Beta period starting today by invitation only.

"We realized the app store reviews were limited in providing relevant information to us as therapists and teachers," said Mai Ling Chan, CEO of Torello Group. "We created YappGuru.com to provide a community where apps, app developers, therapists, teachers, parents, tech experts and bloggers can all come together and share how they are using apps to help others experience a richer life."

The new site is an online resource center providing app reviews by therapy and education industry app experts across all tablet and phone operating systems. In addition to the traditional community-sourced app rating, Yapp Guru identifies and qualifies reviewers as an app expert "Savvy Guru" based on a specified level of proven dedication and experience with apps, which provides a higher level of expertise and credibility to their review.

Savvy Gurus have access to a proprietary app review format targeting extensive industry-specific details such as fine vs. gross motor access, AAC specific attributes including image and voice options, clinical support such as data collection and results recording, technical details, and the most valuable, use recommendations.

Yapp Guru also introduces their signature search system, which finds corresponding blog posts written by their participating Savvy Gurus, to provide additional information on how a specific app is being used within a therapeutic or educational setting.

"Yapp Guru is a place where people can go to find apps which have been used for a specific therapy or educational purpose," Chan said. "We are focused on creating a community that helps people find and use apps easily; YappGuru.com is the first development in that process."

As members of Yapp Guru, for example, therapists can find apps for aphasia, dysphagia and articulation, teachers can find apps for math, reading and science, and parents can find apps to support therapy or educational goals. Additionally, app developers can respond to comments, and tech experts and bloggers can share their extensive knowledge of app use in real world applications.

"Using our signature Keyword Guru, our members can quickly identify and access additional app use info via industry expert blogs," said Chan. "With thousands of new apps available daily, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to discern which apps to buy. Additionally, because these are relatively new therapy and education tools, expert guidance and use examples are sought after and embraced. By bringing together app reviews and blogs in one place, we offer a powerful tool to rapidly grow your knowledge and understanding of apps for therapy and education. That's the Yapp Guru advantage."
